Halo Braids & Haiku

“The last thing I want to do is lay on the couch and sleep all summer,” I said to my parents at the end of the school year. For fear of sleeping away my summer, I loaded up my schedule with internships, activities, and travel. I’m glad I did so because I want to get the most out of my summer, so while people are watching tv, I’ll be gaining experience and knowledge.

The past three weeks at the Fashion Institute of Technology have been absolutely fantastic; I hate knowing that tomorrow is the last day of class. The class work has kept me busy but I’ve learned so much and I’ve made incredible friends!

To FIT I wore my light wash chambray shirt with my pleather skater skirt, both from forever 21, converse, and a Charlotte Russe necklace. I knew it was going to be another unbearably humid day in New York City, so I wanted to put my hair up. I always put my hair in a high pony or a top knot, so I wanted to try something new: a halo braid. I saw a great tutorial video that showed me how to do it. (I might make a how to post about it…!) It was super easy to do and it stayed in place all day!

After coming home from FIT, resting, and flipping through Vogue, I went out to dinner with some friends from school that I haven’t seen in forever! We went to a fantastic Japanese restaurant called Haiku; we caught up with each other over edamame and sushi and left feeling full and happy!

90s Grunge Revival

If you’ve been following my posts (which I recommend you do…you can subscribe on the right), then you know that I’m taking a fashion merchandising class at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. A lot of what we talk about in class is about past, present, and future trends. We’ve been collecting information from multiple mediums (magazines, TV, blogs, etc) to determine what are the new break-out trends, then we find where they came from.

Grunge, made über popular in the 1990s, has been working it’s way back into the closets of teenagers and twenty-somethings. I personally love grunge and the way it looks so casual, but not sloppy. In grunge there are a lot of plaid prints, metal hardware, and distressed finishes. Contrary to what most people think, lace and light colors are important elements of grunge.

I decided to pair my black skater skirt with an acid wash t-shirt to create my own grunge look. The summer heat let up a little bit, so I wore black combat boots, too. To finish off the look, I put a little white bow in my hair to soften up the look and to hold my hair out of my face.

One fun thing we did in class this week is that we visited the Steven Madden Legwear Showroom where we toured the showroom and the design room. We had the chance to talk to the designers, the developers, and some assistants. They told us about the process of creating a piece of legwear, from thinking of the idea to getting samples from Japan to finally licensing out the finished product. It was so so interesting and the people at the showroom gave us complimentary Steve Madden bags!

Stay cool! xoxo linds

Jonas Brothers Live Tour 2013!

The Jonas Brothers announced that they were having a comeback tour and  I knew had to go! Immediately my best friends contacted me and said that they wanted to go too, so we all went together! I was so excited when we bought the tickets, I felt like I was ten years old again.

IMG_0957

Yesterday, my friends and I printed our tickets, got in the car, and made our way to the outdoor theater. It was forecasted to storm but we held out hope that the weather will wait to unleash itself until after the concert. The traffic on the way to the concert was unbearable, but we made it there right in time! (We got there at 6:59, one minute early)

IMG_0959

The fantastic pop band Karmin was the opening act and they did not disappoint. All of their songs were spunky and fun and definitely loud. They performed four original songs, including my fav Broken Hearted, and one cover song, Look at me Now!

IMG_0968

The dark clouds were rolling in and the breeze from the ocean was blowing stronger; the storm was coming soon! Nick Jonas even tweeted that they were going to start the show a little early so that we could beat the storm! There wasn’t any rain yet, but there sure was a lot of lightning.

The suspenseful music started, the lights turned on, and all of the girls started to scream. My friends and I nudged each other and whipped out our cameras, but I noticed something odd. There was a group of girls facing away from the stage, looking at one of the side entrances to the theater, with their cameras at the ready. I looked towards the side entrance, the music starts (Nick Jonas is already on stage playing the guitar), and Kevin Jonas walks out of the door!! He, surrounded by his body guards, walked RIGHT in front of me. I looked back at the entrance and Joe Jonas came out next! I was soo excited! I tried to stop shaking while I took the pictures but they still came out pretty blurry. (The pictures aren’t even zoomed!!)

This concert was probably one of the best that I’ve been to. They played the perfect mix of popular throwback songs, catchy current songs, and brand new songs from their not-yet-released album! They are fantastic singers and Nick is beyond smokin-hot! The show that the brothers put on was so exciting and so much fun!

Black Tie Casual

Hey fashionistas! If you’re like me, you are always looking for an occasion to dress up. I love to wear an outfit that’s fancier than what I would wear to school or shopping. (I’m sure I’m not the only one!) My friends don’t really like to dress up that often, so I’ve had to find ways to look fancy while still looking casual. There’s not harm in looking nice!

Black Tie Casual!

I got these adorable black lace shorts at Nordstroms and I’ve easily incorporated them into my wardrobe. They become a fashion basic that looks casually chic. The tank top has a super cute Oxford look with the collar and wide neck. I got it at Forever 21, but it looks pretty high end (it looks very Zara to me). Never be afraid to mix navy and black!

The massive heat wave that has been looming over the majority of the country has been horrible. The sun is so hot, the air is so still, and the humidity is definitely not my friend. Dressing in lightweight garments is a HUGE must for everybody; standing in those subway stations are absolutely killer. Yesterday I wore a lightweight, royal blue, chiffon shirt that was borrowed from my sister, Nicole, with the long sleeves cuffed up paired with a black skater skirt from Forever21 and studded flats from Kohl’s. Thank goodness that there’s a lot of shade in the city because simply standing in the direct sun for two minutes will make you melt.

I’ll post more about my week and my classes later! To get email updates, subscribe to Lindsay-Land.com!!

Words of Wisdom: Christy and Stacey

Even though I’m well into my teenage years, I’m not the stereotypical angst-y rebel teen. I study a lot, I listen to my parents (most of the time), and I actually like school. Before you jump to conclusions, I like school because I like to learn and I like to see my friends. Like most people, I abhor exams, lengthy homework assignments that seem unnecessary, and teachers who can’t teach. I think learning is really important and that the more you know, the smarter you are when living your life.

I’m at the point in my life where I need to start seriously planning my future (I can’t put it off much longer!). I know I enjoy  business and that I will probably want to pursue a career in it, but in the field of business, what I would I do? That was the question on my mind. I probably have every book on colleges, degrees, and scholarships ever made but I still felt like I didn’t know enough to decide what I’d like to study. I  mentioned this to my parents and my dad came up with a good solution: interview successful women with careers in business about their jobs and college decisions.
I was nervous about the idea, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought it would be such a useful experience to have. By going on these interviews, I would be the one asking the questions and I would be able to get the answers that I’m looking for!
My first interview was with Christy Rhodes, digital account manager at DAC Group. DAC Group is  marketing firm that specializes in digital marketing, the new frontier of marketing. Christy is a talented woman who enjoys her career and does it well. Christy talk to me enthusiastically about her daily routine, which consists of managing her team and her accounts, and about the importance of internships. She stressed the importance of knowing how to use Microsoft Excel and also advised me to never stop learning about business and new developments in the industry. She gave me great insight into office life in the marketing field and she insisted that it’s anything but boring.
The second woman that I met with so far was the president of Co-Communications, a marketing and public relations firm, Stacey Cohen. Stacey is a wonderful woman with so much knowledge of the business world. She single handedly built her own business from the ground up and now has several successful locations in the area. She said that the marketing/public relations world is constantly moving as technology advances, but that the changes are what keeps the field exciting. We talked for quite a while about my own interests, the ideas I have for my future, and degrees that I am contemplating pursuing in college. Social and digital skills are a must-have in the industry, she advises, but is positive that I won’t have much trouble in that respect.
I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with both of these amazing women and learning about what they do. After we got passed the initial introductions, I became more relaxed and I definitely wasn’t nervous anymore.

Bringing Back Grunge

IMG_0854 IMG_0874 IMG_0867

IMG_0865

Today was an another steaming hot day in New York City: 98 degrees, but it felt like 105. I opted for a lightweight tank top from Forever 21 and dark wash high waisted shorts from Charlotte Russe for today’s look. In class at FIT, we’ve been discussing many of the trends that were popular in past decades that are coming back into style. One of the largest trends that is coming back is grunge/punk! Today I tried to emulate some of the punk looks I’ve seen on the runway during Fashion Week. My tank top has a roaring lion graphic on it as well as pointy gold studs on the shoulders. I added a red plaid flannel (so grunge!) to wear over the tank if the air conditioning gets to cold in class, which it definitely does, or to wear around my waist a la Miley Cyrus.

IMG_0835

It’s Monday! You know what that means… FIT! I was desperately hoping to beat the heat and have class inside the coolly air-conditioned building, but we were going on a field trip today. After an hour and a half lecture on retail, retailers, and markets, we walked over as a class to the only JCPenney in Manhattan. There,  we were assigned questions to answer as to the store’s performance in certain areas: visual merchandising, branding, selling to their target market, discounts, and customer satisfaction.

It seemed like an easy assignment, but the longer we observed the store in detail, the answers to those questions appeared ever so clearly. JCPenney has come a long way from where it was in 2005, (aka a drab, dull store that had difficulty drawing in new customers) but still has a long way to go before it can be fairly compared to Macy’s or T.J.Maxx. I definitely feel like I learned a lot just from that one assignment and I can use my new knowledge in the real world.

JCPenney is so close to FIT so we walked there, but it was soo hot out today!! It definitely felt like it was over 100 degrees and it’t just supposed to get hotter over the course of the week… yay. I stayed pretty cool in my black Forever 21 skater skirt, a purple tank top from Nordstroms, and a denim vest borrowed from my sister’s closet. (oops!) I figured that I wouldn’t want to deal with my frizzy tresses today, so I pulled them back into a tight pony with a little volume in the front!

Stay hydrated in this heat! xoxo linds

Teenage Politico

IMG_0692

IMG_0689

Summer is the perfect time to try something new, pursue a new activity, and boost your resume. In addition to taking precollege classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology, I’m interning for a local politician in his current re-election campaign. I never thought that I’d have an interest in politics, but when this opportunity was at my doorstep I took it! So far, it’s been an amazing experience. In the few weeks that I have been interning Legislator Jim Maisano, I’ve learned so much about politics, strategy, and the voting process.

Last week, we had a fun beach-themed fundraiser for Jim at a waterfront restaurant! It was anything but stuffy. The interns, me and four other students, worked at the event signing in guests, taking donations, and shmoozing the important guests. We gave all the guests colorful Hawaiian lays, ‘Re-elect Jim’ stickers, and even Jim Maisano nail files! Jim really cares about the people of the city and he takes his job seriously. He loves talking and getting to know the people in his district first hand. Needless to say it was a fun and productive night.

I’m looking forward to the rest of the stuff we’re going to do!!
