Even though I’m well into my teenage years, I’m not the stereotypical angst-y rebel teen. I study a lot, I listen to my parents (most of the time), and I actually like school. Before you jump to conclusions, I like school because I like to learn and I like to see my friends. Like most people, I abhor exams, lengthy homework assignments that seem unnecessary, and teachers who can’t teach. I think learning is really important and that the more you know, the smarter you are when living your life.
I’m at the point in my life where I need to start seriously planning my future (I can’t put it off much longer!). I know I enjoy business and that I will probably want to pursue a career in it, but in the field of business, what I would I do? That was the question on my mind. I probably have every book on colleges, degrees, and scholarships ever made but I still felt like I didn’t know enough to decide what I’d like to study. I mentioned this to my parents and my dad came up with a good solution: interview successful women with careers in business about their jobs and college decisions.
I was nervous about the idea, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought it would be such a useful experience to have. By going on these interviews, I would be the one asking the questions and I would be able to get the answers that I’m looking for!
My first interview was with Christy Rhodes, digital account manager at DAC Group. DAC Group is marketing firm that specializes in digital marketing, the new frontier of marketing. Christy is a talented woman who enjoys her career and does it well. Christy talk to me enthusiastically about her daily routine, which consists of managing her team and her accounts, and about the importance of internships. She stressed the importance of knowing how to use Microsoft Excel and also advised me to never stop learning about business and new developments in the industry. She gave me great insight into office life in the marketing field and she insisted that it’s anything but boring.
The second woman that I met with so far was the president of Co-Communications, a marketing and public relations firm, Stacey Cohen. Stacey is a wonderful woman with so much knowledge of the business world. She single handedly built her own business from the ground up and now has several successful locations in the area. She said that the marketing/public relations world is constantly moving as technology advances, but that the changes are what keeps the field exciting. We talked for quite a while about my own interests, the ideas I have for my future, and degrees that I am contemplating pursuing in college. Social and digital skills are a must-have in the industry, she advises, but is positive that I won’t have much trouble in that respect.
I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with both of these amazing women and learning about what they do. After we got passed the initial introductions, I became more relaxed and I definitely wasn’t nervous anymore.
