It’s Monday! You know what that means… FIT! I was desperately hoping to beat the heat and have class inside the coolly air-conditioned building, but we were going on a field trip today. After an hour and a half lecture on retail, retailers, and markets, we walked over as a class to the only JCPenney in Manhattan. There,  we were assigned questions to answer as to the store’s performance in certain areas: visual merchandising, branding, selling to their target market, discounts, and customer satisfaction.

It seemed like an easy assignment, but the longer we observed the store in detail, the answers to those questions appeared ever so clearly. JCPenney has come a long way from where it was in 2005, (aka a drab, dull store that had difficulty drawing in new customers) but still has a long way to go before it can be fairly compared to Macy’s or T.J.Maxx. I definitely feel like I learned a lot just from that one assignment and I can use my new knowledge in the real world.

JCPenney is so close to FIT so we walked there, but it was soo hot out today!! It definitely felt like it was over 100 degrees and it’t just supposed to get hotter over the course of the week… yay. I stayed pretty cool in my black Forever 21 skater skirt, a purple tank top from Nordstroms, and a denim vest borrowed from my sister’s closet. (oops!) I figured that I wouldn’t want to deal with my frizzy tresses today, so I pulled them back into a tight pony with a little volume in the front!

Stay hydrated in this heat! xoxo linds

Four Looks, One Post

One thing I absolutely love about Fashion Institute of Technology is that when I’m there, I don’t feel like I’m at school. I’m learning, but I’m not bored. I can’t say that honestly about some of my other classes at high school (my precalculus teacher was particularly awful this year). When I’m at FIT I feel not like a high school girl at a college, but like a girl at the right place at the right time.

Since it is the Fashion Institute of Technology, I love styling myself in a way that’s fun, trendy, and a little nicer than something I’d wear to high school. I opt for skirts in the warmer months for they are so easy and look casual in a very put together way! Also, pieces with bright colors are definitely my favorite to wear. I can’t clearly define my style yet, and I think that’s a pretty good thing. One day I’ll wake up and think, “Hm… I want to look very Kate Spade today,” and the next I may think, “I’m feeling very John Paul Gaultier.” I always dress with a theme in mind, though.

Monday I wore a Forever 21 sheer polka-dot shirt with a yellow miniskirt from Old Navy (it’s surprisingly cute and quality)!

Tuesday I paired this etherial ballet pink chiffon skirt from Ann Taylor Loft with a floral top from Forever 21. The eggplant bag is H&M and obviously the shoes are Converse!

Hump-day aka Wednesday I was going for a leather and lace look (which was kind of a mistake since it was steaming hot in the city). I adore this floral short with lace shoulders from Marshall’s! My pleather skirt is from Forever 21 as well as my headband!

Lastly, Thursday I wore a black and white aztec print shirt from H&M with black lace shorts from Nordstroms, the eggplant-colored purse (my favorite purse!), and royal blue studded flats from Kohl’s!

Fashion Institute of Technology: Summer Live

(I’m so excited to write this post!)

IMG_0584

This week was the very first week of the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Summer Live Program for high school students! My sister and I are enrolled in the program which lasts three weeks long and is held on the FIT campus in New York City. We take the train to Grand Central Station, then a subway, then another subway, and arrive on the corner of Seventh and 28th, the FIT campus, where we make our way through the bustling, well-dressed crowd of teens and twenty-somethings to the Starbucks in the cafeteria before class.

Class starts at 9:30 in the morning; the class I take is called The Ins and Outs of Fashion Merchandising. I feel as though I’ve learned so incredibly much even though I have only had class for four days! I have taken at least 15 pages of notes so far in my notebooks covering topics such as fashion during the French Revolution to color theory to fashion forecasting. As a class, we took a trip to Fashion Snoops, the immensely influential fashion forecasting website, where we learned how the trends are predicted and what to look for on the streets and in magazines to predict trends on our own. They even hinted that they were interested in having us intern for them in the follow years!

Also, we visited the FIT library to learn how and where to find the materials we will need for out upcoming projects. We have two project that we need to complete by then end of the course: an analysis of the trends in a specific decade and a complete summary of trends for Summer 2013. I could spend all day in the FIT library simply flipping through pages of the books and magazines. The photos in the books are fabulous, there are collections of novels dedicated to flowers or landscapes or food to supply designers and students with all of the inspiration they will ever need, and a a myriad of how to books (how to drape, how to draw three dimensional animals, etc.)! I’ll be spending most of my time in the section where the history of fashion books are kept, so that I can do all the research I’ll need for my project, which I’ll probably do on the 40s.

In class on Wednesday, we were split up into groups to create trend boards using photos from the internet or from magazines. The girls in my group and I decided to make the central theme of our board to be “Print on Print.” Nowadays in fashion, stylists and designers layer bold prints on top of each other to add interest and depth to an outfit (which is a far cry from the massively popular minimalist trend that is walking the runway). We further concentrated on three smaller themes within the large theme: black and white print on print, colorful print on print, and same print on same print. This was the result of the board (which achieved praise by out professor):

Every day after class, which ends at 12:30 pm, my sister, some friends from class, and I find a place to grab some lunch and hope it’s not a mob scene inside. So far we’ve had Panera Bread, Kobeyake, and Cafe Guy & Gallard! A lot of times, we stroll around the campus after lunch until we’ve worn ourselves out and make our way home.

“We want more! We want more [Prints]!”

As the weather gets warmer and warmer, I find myself gravitating way more to bright, colorful pieces rather than the mute, monotone pieces I used to gravitate towards in the winter months. Spring is overall a happy season and it just makes me want to wear happy clothes!

Bold patterns and eye-catching colors have flooded every store out there and I can’t wait to get my hands on some unique pieces. I’m also really excited because yellows and oranges are really in this summer; I’ve always wanted to try out those colors but I could never find many pieces that I liked that were yellow or orange.

anthro dashka stitched blouse

I can always find one-of-a-kind pieces at Anthropology; that’s why I love that store so much! This pale pink ruffled peplum blouse is unique in its structure and pattern. I need to take a trip to Anthro soon!

parker emmy jacket

This jacket could be so versatile because of all the colors in it. It’s the perfect summer blazer and can be dressed up or dressed down. I actually met the designer for Parker NY and went to their NYC showroom. It was one of the best experiences of my life. They pride themselves on their unique patterns! Check them out!

modcloth new to the block bag

Isn’t this bag from Modcloth beyond adorable?! It’s so dainty and preppy that I wish I owned it. The combination of colors and the splash of polka dots makes this adorable bag a necessity!

lulus can you zig it? blue chevron print dress

No print screams summer more than chevron! This casual dress is perfect to wear for a day in town or a dinner by the coast. I love the stark contrast between the white and the cobalt blue. Swoon!!

The other day I was out shopping for a bunch of presents I needed to by for my friend’s and family’s birthdays and I got a little sidetracked and feel in LOVE with this peplum top by BUFFALO by David Bitton. I’ve never seen a print like this before; it’s like a brocade-animal print. I had to buy it. Styling it will be so much fun!!

No Longer MIA

Hi lovelies!

I’m so so sorry I haven’t posted in a while.

With school, AP testing, the SAT, and so many other things, I just couldn’t find the time to blog! *gasp*  The good thing is that I only have one, yes only one, day of school left and only one regents exam to take. Isn’t that insanity? I only have one day left being a junior in high school.

This summer I have a lot on my plate! I’m visiting my relatives in Nebraska, I’m taking a three week course at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City for fashion merchandising (words cannot express my excitement for it!), and I also might have an internship at a marketing firm (I’m crossing my fingers!!).

Of course, I’ll be blogging every minute of my summer! I also hope to do a lot of volunteering, attend dance classes at Broadway Dance Center, and spend some down time at the beach.

I hope all of you have had a great spring!

The Blizzard Named Nemo

I can’t decide what is the best part about snow days, if it’s the fact that I don’t have to go to school or the surreal feeling I get watching the sparkling snow cover the streets and houses with a blanket of white. Either way, snow days just feel like an unexpected gift given to us by mother nature.

Shout out to the storm-naming people for naming this blizzard Nemo and giving everyone that will be hit by it a really good reason to watch Finding Nemo while snuggling under some warm blankets. The snow has been persistently falling since about 6 am and should continue to fall until mid-afternoon tomorrow. Where I live in New York we are supposed to get about a foot of snow, which means I’ll be stuck in my house.

What’s the best way to make use of a snow day, you ask?

  1. Have a spa day! Take the whole day to relax and treat yourself, there’s nothing wrong for having a “Me Day” every once and a while. Give yourself a mani-pedi, a facial, and maybe take a nice long bath!
  2. Have a movie marathon! Have you ever seen commercials of movie previews that look incredible and must-see, but you never actually get the chance to see them? Watch them back to back all day, you can find almost every movie made on the internet. Don’t forget the popcorn!!
  3. Cross things off of your To-Do list! Have a lot of odds and ends to do but never get around to doing them? Now that you have the whole day free, organize your room, sort through your closet, anything!
  4. Have an arts and crafts day! Cut out a bunch of pictures from magazines or the internet and make a collage or a mood board.

Have tons of fun on your snow day! Stay warm xoxo

2012: My Year in Pictures

We always complain about how long the week is or how horrible your day has been, always remarking “Oh my gawd, can you believe it’s only Wednesday?” or “Ugh, worst Monday ever.” But looking back on my year, I forget all the long sleepless nights I spent studying for a Global History test and the week that me and my best friend didn’t talk because of a stupid fight, and I only remember the best times I had.

I definitely grew as a person this year, stepping out of my comfort zone and trying new things! I also learned so much from school, from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and from my experiences. I’ve still got a long way to go and much more time to figure myself out but I know I have come one step closer to coming into my own.

I put together a ton of photos from some of the great times I had this year! I hope you had as good of a year as I did.

ENJOY xoxo

(Warning: Epic Post)

In January, I had my Sweeet 16 party. This fairytale is definitely one I’ll never forget!

Street Style

The train my sister and I were taking to get to our class at the Fashion Institute of Technology was running late so we had some extra time to take subway selfies, yay!

It’s getting pretty cold out in New York so I only had so much time left to wear my skirts. I wore mine with sheer black tights, wool crew socks, and my new combat boots! On top I wore my coziest grey sweater. I added a black knit ear warmer/headband and my usual eggplant handbag.

Field Trips & Fashion

Hey dolls!

Yesterday I had my third precollege class at The Fashion Institute of Technology and it is just amazing. I love going so much and now that I take the class I look forward to Saturday’s more than ever! I think it’s just the fact that I can dress however I want and be in the city all day. I learn so many new things about designers and the market that my brain can barely keep!

During class yesterday we took a field trip to the ever-so-urban Meatpacking District. There, we split up into small groups and wandered 14th street. We were encouraged to stop in all of the couture boutiques and look around at all of the stuff that was once on the runway.

My group went to Moschino and Alexander McQueen and a huge thrift store! I fell in love with every single garment in Moschino. Everything from the shapes to the material to the  colors were absolutely stunning; they balanced girly with edgy perfectly. The Alexander McQueen boutique was another world entirely. It was set up like a museum, I didn’t know if I was allowed to touch any of it! I was in awe at everything I saw; I had to snap some pictures. The thrift store was super chic with vendors that sold records to vendors that sold bracelets made of cutlery. There were racks of vintage furs and old band tees and everything you could imagine. I found these two super cute hand made rings and I loved them so much I had to buy one!

We all met together in the Chelsea Markets, which was adorably decorated for halloween with spiderwebs and ghosts hanging from the ceiling and purple lights! Oh, how I love the city.

We might be going to SoHo next week! AH I’m beyonndd excited!
