Ombré: Still Hot or Not?

I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen way too many bad ombré hair-dos.

I thought that ombré was going to come and go in the blink of an eye. “Oh, it’ll just be a passing fad,” I thought. Boy was I wrong!

Ombré has been really cool for a really long time. Believe or not, ombré exploded into popularity in, like, 2010 (don’t quote me on that, though).  Since then, everything from coats to crochet are sold in a variety of ombré’d colors. When done well, ombré is beautiful and simultaneously elegant and fun! At one point, my hair was subtly ombré (an unintentional side effect of putting off dying my roots) and I really liked the look although I only kept it for a few months.

A few weeks ago, I was thoroughly surprised when I saw Giambattista Valli (one of the designers who frequently steals my heart) featured not one, not two, but THREE ombré ball gowns in his Fall 2014 Haute Couture Show. There was a ton of ombré in the Elie Saab Fall 2014 Haute Couture Show as well!  I thought that ombré was on its way out, but I guess not.

Aside from Saab and Valli, not many people have not reinvented ombré in tasteful ways. Attempts to salvage whatever is left of ombré have overwhelmingly fallen flat. Give it up people, ombré lipstick is not cool.

Ombré has been here for 4 years; 2 years too long if you ask me, though.

DIY Diva

Howdy!

So, I have officially become a do-it-yourself diva! I have always admired the super creative people who could take their old stuff and completely revamp it. They are so cool and crafty! I began to realize how much old stuff I have that I never ever use, and that was when I starting DIY-ing.

Although I’m still a novice diva, I have done a few projects that came out exceptionally well! (If I do say so myself )

I just recently went through my closet parting with the items that no longer fit me or that I don’t really like anymore and I found one of my denim mini skirts from way back in middle school when they were super cool! And, with my mom’s sewing kit, an old sweater, and a little magic, my old school mini skirt was transformed into an amazing messenger bag! I sewed some sequins here and there and I made the handle and the bottom of the bag out of the old sweater and even studded one of the pockets! Super thrifty, right?!

Also, in my mom’s sewing kit, I found the prettiest piece of lace that she wasn’t using! So I whipped out a pair of lavender denim short shorts and sewed the lace on the top of one of the back pockets! It looks adorable and it adds a little girly touch.

I am also a huuuge fan of the at home mani-pedi! Yes, every once and a while it’s nice to get your nails done at a salon, but many people can’t afford to get them done regularly. DIY nails and funky nail art are really trendy and fun to do! I do my own nails all of the time and I only get them done before a special event or a vacation because it is so easy to do your own mani-pedi!

To do your own awesome mani-pedi this is what you should do:

  • wash and exfoliate your hands and feet
  • moisturize  your hands and feet
  • cut and file your nails
  • apply a thin clear coat
  • paint 2-3 coats of your color depending on how sheer your color is
  • TIP: you should wait about ten minutes in between coats; never paint another coat when your nails are still wet because your nails would take forever to dry!
  • apply a top coat

And it’s as simple as that to do a DIY mani-pedi! Of course, now you can do any designs that you would like. I’ve done stripes, reverse french mani, ombre, and even galaxy nails!

Right now I’m wearing Pacific Blue by Sally Hanson. I did an ombre glitter design on it with 518 by Artmatic.  All you have to do to achieve this look is to do the basic mani from above then, when its dry, paint the glitter polish backward (start from the white part of the nail and paint towards the finger). This creates the ombre look because there are more sparkles at the top of the nail than the bottom!
