When in Soho

There are few places I love more than New York City. I am beyond lucky to have it at my fingertips, so, naturally, I take full advantage of it when I can. Most recently, I met up with one of my closest friends, Nicole, in Soho for a shopping-filled day. As we strolled up and down the designer-lined streets and passed a wide variety of people, we filled each other in on what is new in our lives, for the last time I saw Nicole was at a class that we took together at the Fashion Institute of Technology over a year ago!

We spent the day popping in and out of practically every store on Broadway, Greene, and Spring. We were on the hunt for dresses to wear for our high school graduations (yikes!) and pieces to fill out our summer wardrobes (to commemorate the first day of summer). Sadly, we had no luck with the graduation dresses, but I did score some fab shirts at Zara! Beware of entering Zara during a sale, though; it was madness. I was mauled by crazed customers making a beeline to the fifty-person fitting room line. My items were not on final sale, so I bypassed that line and went straight to the register, figuring that if I didn’t like them when I tried them on at home (which didn’t happen), I could always return them.

I particularly love this shirt from Zara. When I bought it, Zara’s sale was going on, so it was a steal! It has such a tropical vibe, which made it a perfect top to wear on the first day of summer.

After a day filled with walking, Nicole and I worked up quite an appetite. We stopped to get a bite to eat at Soho Park on Prince Street for a late lunch. The outdoor seating area, complete with shrubbery and vines, is what drew us in in the beginning, but the snack bar-style system and the very affordable food sealed the deal. My chicken caesar salad and Nicole’s chicken sandwich were exceptionally delicious! Following our meal, we reluctantly made our way to our respective trains, knowing that we won’t wait another year to see each other again.

For now,

Northside Festival 2014

Spontaneity has never been a trait of mine; I’m a planner.  For this reason, one of my New Year’s resolutions is to be more impulsive and spur-of-the-moment. I embraced the spirit of spontaneity on Saturday when I read about a concert in Brooklyn that was to occur later that day in an email. I immediately called up my best friend Emma and threw on a dress, and, before we knew it, we were on our way to Williamsburg!

IMG_8522

IMG_8497

IMG_8517

We had no idea what to expect when we got to Brooklyn. Neither of us had ever been to Brooklyn nor had we heard of the band that is playing! Are there going to be a lot of people at the concert? Will it be inside? Will the band sound good live? We had no idea.

We were more than pleasantly surprised when we got to the concert site. The “little concert” we were going to turned out to be a festival: Northside Festival 2014! The stage was set up on Bedford Avenue, the longest street in Brooklyn, and the street was closed off for blocks so that only pedestrians could use it. Unique vendors lined the sides of the street, turf covered the street, and the coolest kids of Brooklyn swarmed up and down the street. Emma and I grabbed iced teas, sprawled out on the grass, and soaked up the sun as The Piers played a fantastic live set.

IMG_8525

After the band finished, we popped in and out of the stores, drew on the street with chalk along with several fabulously-dressed toddlers, then we stopped for dinner at TRIX Restaurant on Bedford. Not only was the food delicious, the portions were large, the location was great, the staff were friendly, and the price was more than reasonable!

IMG_8530

Needless to say that we made the right decision by going to the concert last minute, and we are definitely going to visit Brooklyn again.

Words of Wisdom: Kimberly Yarnell

IMG_1634

( Forever 21 shirt, Loft skirt, Converse, Forever 21 bag)

It was a rainy day in New York City, but it didn’t matter to me. I was so excited! I was on my way to the Macy’s on 34th Street to meet Kimberly Yarnell, the Vice President of Digital Media for Macy’s. After going inside the store, signing in, and waiting a few minutes at the visitors desk, Kim met me and brought me up to her office (which is super cute and has a fantastic view out of the window, by the way).

For nearly an hour we talked about technology, fashion, business, and her job. Because of the constant release of new technology, Kim’s job is fast-moving and never static. She’s up-to-date on all of the new “hot” apps and websites, and she uses them to grow the Macy’s brand. One skill that’s necessary for this job, she said, is the ability to solve problems quickly and creatively. Kim’s job is so cutting-edge that she comes across problems that no one has ever had before.

An English literature major with a dream to practice law, Kim didn’t know she would end up as a VP at Macy’s. She told me her life is the way it is today because of “happy accidents.” Her advice to me was to not stress too much about what school I go to or what I study, because, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t matter as much as I think it does.

I’m so glad I had the chance to talk to Kimberly because I learned a lot. She’s so fun and fab! Great Words of Wisdom!

Last Day at FIT

IMG_1335

Last Thursday was an incredibly sad day. It was the last day at FIT Fashion Institute of Technology’s Summer Live Program and (most likely) my last day ever at FIT, unless I decide to go to college there next fall. I really love attending classes there and I always learn so much stuff (definitely more than I learn in regular high school, HAH!)

In class in the last day, our professor gave a lecture on the future of merchandising and the impact of technology on the fashion industry. It was quite interesting (new tech-y inventions)and borderline creepy (mannequins that record you while you shop). The advancements in technology will revolutionize the fashion industry, but it will also have their advantages and disadvantages.

After class was over, all of my new friends and I exchanged phone numbers, Twitters, Facebooks, Instagrams, and hugs, the whole nine yards. I’m going to miss them so much, so hopefully we can all keep in touch. Most of them boarded their planes back to Arizona, California, and Florida while I took the commuter train back home. Everyone is so friendly at FIT; that’s one of the things I really like about it. It’s amazing how close a random group of kids with similar interests can get in just three short weeks.

I’m confident that I’ll see my friends from FIT soon!

If any of you are considering taking a precollege course at the Fashion Institute of Technology, I would recommend the program ten thousand times if I could! It’s a really great opportunity.

FIT Girls Day Out!

Wednesday was the second to last day of class at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and already everyone at school was already feeling sad about leaving. Today all of the final projects were due and presented. For my class, The Ins and Outs of Fashion Merchandising, I had to write a paper and create a supplementary PowerPoint about one major trend of Summer 2013. We had to analyze the trend in terms of color, fabric, details, prints, patterns, and more. I found it was a really eye-opening project because it made me able to spot certain trends in magazines, in stores, and on the streets. I guess I did the project well because I got an A- on it!! *cue the applause*

After class, my sister and I spent some time in Times Square! It’s fun to have some quality sister time every once and a while. We ran around to all of the good stores and made fun of confused tourists who fumbled with their enormous maps (it was totally LOL worthy!). Times Square is such a cool place and it’s a lot of fun whether you’re a tourist or a New Yorker.

Once we left Times Square, my sister and I met up with a few FIT girls with whom we’ve gotten really close to over the course of the month from FIT. Girls from all over the globe enroll in the FIT summer programs, so you want to spend all of the time with them as you can! The six of us grabbed a quick dinner at Juniors, then we had delicious Baked by Melissa cupcakes for desserts, and chatted throughout the whole night. You can never go wrong with Melissa’s!!

Halo Braids & Haiku

“The last thing I want to do is lay on the couch and sleep all summer,” I said to my parents at the end of the school year. For fear of sleeping away my summer, I loaded up my schedule with internships, activities, and travel. I’m glad I did so because I want to get the most out of my summer, so while people are watching tv, I’ll be gaining experience and knowledge.

The past three weeks at the Fashion Institute of Technology have been absolutely fantastic; I hate knowing that tomorrow is the last day of class. The class work has kept me busy but I’ve learned so much and I’ve made incredible friends!

To FIT I wore my light wash chambray shirt with my pleather skater skirt, both from forever 21, converse, and a Charlotte Russe necklace. I knew it was going to be another unbearably humid day in New York City, so I wanted to put my hair up. I always put my hair in a high pony or a top knot, so I wanted to try something new: a halo braid. I saw a great tutorial video that showed me how to do it. (I might make a how to post about it…!) It was super easy to do and it stayed in place all day!

After coming home from FIT, resting, and flipping through Vogue, I went out to dinner with some friends from school that I haven’t seen in forever! We went to a fantastic Japanese restaurant called Haiku; we caught up with each other over edamame and sushi and left feeling full and happy!

90s Grunge Revival

If you’ve been following my posts (which I recommend you do…you can subscribe on the right), then you know that I’m taking a fashion merchandising class at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. A lot of what we talk about in class is about past, present, and future trends. We’ve been collecting information from multiple mediums (magazines, TV, blogs, etc) to determine what are the new break-out trends, then we find where they came from.

Grunge, made über popular in the 1990s, has been working it’s way back into the closets of teenagers and twenty-somethings. I personally love grunge and the way it looks so casual, but not sloppy. In grunge there are a lot of plaid prints, metal hardware, and distressed finishes. Contrary to what most people think, lace and light colors are important elements of grunge.

I decided to pair my black skater skirt with an acid wash t-shirt to create my own grunge look. The summer heat let up a little bit, so I wore black combat boots, too. To finish off the look, I put a little white bow in my hair to soften up the look and to hold my hair out of my face.

IMG_1082 IMG_1089 IMG_1093 IMG_1095

One fun thing we did in class this week is that we visited the Steven Madden Legwear Showroom where we toured the showroom and the design room. We had the chance to talk to the designers, the developers, and some assistants. They told us about the process of creating a piece of legwear, from thinking of the idea to getting samples from Japan to finally licensing out the finished product. It was so so interesting and the people at the showroom gave us complimentary Steve Madden bags!

Stay cool! xoxo linds

Jonas Brothers Live Tour 2013!

The Jonas Brothers announced that they were having a comeback tour and  I knew had to go! Immediately my best friends contacted me and said that they wanted to go too, so we all went together! I was so excited when we bought the tickets, I felt like I was ten years old again.

IMG_0957

Yesterday, my friends and I printed our tickets, got in the car, and made our way to the outdoor theater. It was forecasted to storm but we held out hope that the weather will wait to unleash itself until after the concert. The traffic on the way to the concert was unbearable, but we made it there right in time! (We got there at 6:59, one minute early)

IMG_0959

The fantastic pop band Karmin was the opening act and they did not disappoint. All of their songs were spunky and fun and definitely loud. They performed four original songs, including my fav Broken Hearted, and one cover song, Look at me Now!

IMG_0968

The dark clouds were rolling in and the breeze from the ocean was blowing stronger; the storm was coming soon! Nick Jonas even tweeted that they were going to start the show a little early so that we could beat the storm! There wasn’t any rain yet, but there sure was a lot of lightning.

Screen shot 2013-07-21 at 11.39.21 AM

The suspenseful music started, the lights turned on, and all of the girls started to scream. My friends and I nudged each other and whipped out our cameras, but I noticed something odd. There was a group of girls facing away from the stage, looking at one of the side entrances to the theater, with their cameras at the ready. I looked towards the side entrance, the music starts (Nick Jonas is already on stage playing the guitar), and Kevin Jonas walks out of the door!! He, surrounded by his body guards, walked RIGHT in front of me. I looked back at the entrance and Joe Jonas came out next! I was soo excited! I tried to stop shaking while I took the pictures but they still came out pretty blurry. (The pictures aren’t even zoomed!!)

IMG_0964

This concert was probably one of the best that I’ve been to. They played the perfect mix of popular throwback songs, catchy current songs, and brand new songs from their not-yet-released album! They are fantastic singers and Nick is beyond smokin-hot! The show that the brothers put on was so exciting and so much fun!

The massive heat wave that has been looming over the majority of the country has been horrible. The sun is so hot, the air is so still, and the humidity is definitely not my friend. Dressing in lightweight garments is a HUGE must for everybody; standing in those subway stations are absolutely killer. Yesterday I wore a lightweight, royal blue, chiffon shirt that was borrowed from my sister, Nicole, with the long sleeves cuffed up paired with a black skater skirt from Forever21 and studded flats from Kohl’s. Thank goodness that there’s a lot of shade in the city because simply standing in the direct sun for two minutes will make you melt.

I’ll post more about my week and my classes later! To get email updates, subscribe to Lindsay-Land.com!!

It’s Monday! You know what that means… FIT! I was desperately hoping to beat the heat and have class inside the coolly air-conditioned building, but we were going on a field trip today. After an hour and a half lecture on retail, retailers, and markets, we walked over as a class to the only JCPenney in Manhattan. There,  we were assigned questions to answer as to the store’s performance in certain areas: visual merchandising, branding, selling to their target market, discounts, and customer satisfaction.

It seemed like an easy assignment, but the longer we observed the store in detail, the answers to those questions appeared ever so clearly. JCPenney has come a long way from where it was in 2005, (aka a drab, dull store that had difficulty drawing in new customers) but still has a long way to go before it can be fairly compared to Macy’s or T.J.Maxx. I definitely feel like I learned a lot just from that one assignment and I can use my new knowledge in the real world.

JCPenney is so close to FIT so we walked there, but it was soo hot out today!! It definitely felt like it was over 100 degrees and it’t just supposed to get hotter over the course of the week… yay. I stayed pretty cool in my black Forever 21 skater skirt, a purple tank top from Nordstroms, and a denim vest borrowed from my sister’s closet. (oops!) I figured that I wouldn’t want to deal with my frizzy tresses today, so I pulled them back into a tight pony with a little volume in the front!

Stay hydrated in this heat! xoxo linds
